We are looking forward to working with your child this year in Reading Club. Kindergarten students are focusing on learning letter names and sounds. Kindergarteners are not concentrating on sight words right now. Find out more about letters and sounds on the Kindergarten page. Everyone in First and Second Grade Reading Club can have fun practicing sight words. Above is a link to Dolch sight word lists. Dolch words are frequently used English words. Students see these words often in the books they read. We are sending home with your child a list of the words they were unfamiliar with when we asked them to read the Dolch words to us. Only practice a few words at a time so your child is not overwhelmed. You can increase the number of words you practice as your child gains confidence in learning these sight words. As your child is learning new words, remember to review the words already learned so they are not forgotten. Spend about five to ten minutes a day reading sight words with your child. Make the learning fun! Click on the button below to find some exciting ways to practice sight words with your child everyday.
If you find your child's list of Dolch words to learn is too exhaustive and your child is struggling, have them start with this list of Trick Words. Trick Words are also words students see often in books, but we learn fewer of them at a slower rate than the Dolch words. Every student learns at their own pace, so begin with the Trick Words if your child is struggling. We want each child to love reading and feel confident and successful on their journey to becoming a better reader.
