First Grade Reading Club
All first graders in Reading Club are working on learning sight words. Please look at the SIght Word page on this website for fun ways to practice sight words at home. In first grade each student is working at their own pace. Some students need more direct instruction, some students only need a boost before they have the confidence to read on their own, and some are anywhere in between. Because of this, we use the Fundations program for students who need more of a phonics foundation and Journeys Intervention for those who need a boost in understanding the classroom reading curriculum. Every student is exposed to what is being learned in our Journeys Invention program in their classroom as well. The Reading Support Team also uses our own materials and resources to help students learn to read outside of using these two programs. Reading Support is fluid meaning students can enter and leave support based on what they are needing at any point in the school year. This webpage for first grade is divided into what we are working on in our Fundations program and our Journeys Intervention program. There is great information in both the Fundations and Journeys sections of this webpage. Please look at the information in both sections.
Fundations
In Fundations, we are learning that digraphs are two letters that stick together to make one sound. The digraph ck is used only at the the end of words. We use ck when spelling a word that has one vowel, the vowel makes its sound, and the word ends with the /c/ sound. We also learned that the letters q and u are almost always together in words. Because of this, we call the letter q a chicken letter or buddy letter. Qq is a scared chicken if it is not with with the letter u. They love being next to each other which makes them buddies. We will be introducing the glued sound "all" and bonus letters in Reading Club. Bonus letters are f, l, s, and z and are used in words when there is one vowel, the vowel makes it sound, and the word ends with the sound /f/, /l/, /s/, or /z/.
Learning about digraphs
The digraph ck is used at the end of a word that has one vowel, the vowel makes its sound and the word ends with a /c/ sound.
We call q with an u a chicken letter or buddy letter.
.Bonus letters are in words that have one vowel, the vowel makes its sound, and the word ends with f, l, s, or z.
The glued sound all. These three letters are glued together to make the sound /ol/. This glued sound also has a bonus letter l since the vowel still makes a short sound.
