Please look at the SIght Word page on this website for fun ways to practice sight words at home. In second grade each student is working at their own pace. Some students need more direct instruction, some students only need a boost before they have the confidence to read on their own, and some are anywhere in between. Because of this, we use the Fundations program for students who need more of a phonics foundation and Journeys Intervention for those who need a boost in understanding the classroom reading curriculum. Every student is exposed to what is being learned in our Journeys Invention program in their classroom as well. The Reading Support Team also uses our own materials and resources to help students learn to read outside of using these two programs. Reading Support is fluid meaning students can enter and leave support based on what they are needing at any point in the school year. There is great information in both the Fundations and Journeys sections of this second grade webpage. Please look at the information in both sections.
Fundations
Second grade Fundations students will be introduced to consonant blends and digraph blends. They will be reading and spelling words with four sounds. We will also learn about suffix s added to the end of base words and how to tap these words. We will spend time learning about R-controlled vowel sounds as well. We won't forget about digraphs and glued sounds since we will be reviewing them often.

Journeys
Students working in the Journeys Intervention program will be learning about the vocabulary strategies of prefixes, idioms, using a dictionary, and the suffix ly. They will be introduced to base words with s and es, vowel teams ai, ay, ee, ea, oa, ow, compound words and the schwa sound as their phonics skills. Comprehension skills will focus on conclusions, text and graphic features, main idea and details, author's purpose, and cause and effect. While reading, students will use the strategies of predicting, questioning, evaluating, summarizing, and monitoring/clarifying. Students will be exposed to compound sentences, expanding sentences, quotation marks, proper nouns, and abbreviations in their grammar lessons.
Prefixes added to the beginning of a word can change the meaning of the word.
